Based on good general conditions and business environment the study course “Eco-energy Engineering” was founded in 2002 at the University of Applied Sciences in Wels, Upper Austria. According to the European Buildings Directive we offer a holistic education and training imparting knowledge of ecology, renewable energy, architecture - primarily passive buildings - as well as the very important principles of electrical and mechanical engineering needed for building services engineering and plant construction.
A few pretty good examples of the spectrum of our work in education and engineering research are available. Last years projects were dealing with passive buildings, Blower-Door (test of leaks in buildings) and building-thermography. The calculation of the energy performance of buildings is one of our main topics. The well-established methods in Austria for the calculation of the building en-ergy demand from the “Österreichischen Institut für Bautechnik” (OIB) and the “Passivhaus Projek-tierungspaket“ (PHPP) can handle the energy efficiency of buildings. But there are some more require-ments to create high performance buildings with content users.
The fundamental question for occupants, according to the thermal behavior and comfort, is not part of usual approaches like the common “Energy Performance Certificate”. For sus-tainable und comfortable passive buildings it is necessary to consider some basic demands of building physics as well as urban planning, life-cycle assessment and air conditions. Simulation packages could offer a method to enhance the design of buildings, which includes the thermal comfort factor neglected by the well established methods for design. This method will optimize the energy efficiency and the comfort factor of buildings.
