Opinion Mining and Biomedical Information Retrieval

In our modern knowledge society, the effective use of mostly unstructured and exponentially growing data is one of the biggest challenges for computer science. Humans as information receivers only have very limited ability to generate knowledge from almost infinitely large volumes of electronic documents. We want to address this problem by developing new and enhancing existing algorithms and tools in the field of information retrieval (IR) and investigate scientifically based concrete problems of the research areas of the two faculties involved.

As part of this project, requirements in the two application domains biomedical information retrieval and opinion mining shall be identifed and the usability of existing IR algorithms and tools shall be examined. The development of new heuristic methods and mashups is aimed to solve the problem, and we plan to prototypically realize them as corresponding software systems based on these findings. Specifically we plan to implement on the one hand an opinion mining tool for the analysis and visualization of moods and opinions on, e.g., people, companies and products, and on the other hand an information retrieval system for biomedical data collections.
