Annual plants fibres are less homogeneous due to their structure. The adhesion of straw fibres does not yield satisfactory results for industrial applications. Therefore, pre-treatment of the annual plant fibres is necessary to increase their homogeneity and to improve the material properties. This study deals with the influence of pre-treatment on the quality of annual plant fibres for insulation materials. Maize straw and wheat straw were selected for production of the insulation panels. Different pre-treatments (e.g. mechanical) were analysed. To clarify the changes within the structure of the plants due to the pre-treatment process material analysis was carried out using FT-IR spectroscopy and microscope. Also, the particle size distribution was determined after the pre-treatments. Various straw particles were glued with urea-formaldehyde resin (UF) in a plowshare blender and pressed to light panels using a lab equipment. Furthermore, the thermal conductivity were analysed as important value for insulation materials. The results showed that the pre-treatment process homogenizes the materials and the processes could be used for the production of insulation. The measured thermal conductivity of all panels was in the range of other natural insulation materials on the market although there were no additives included to improve certain insulation properties
