To determine the phase transformations, dilatometric experiments were performed, and the microstructure was characterized by light optical microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and transmission electron microscopy. Precipitation of lamellar cementite was observed in the microstructure for extended treatment times at 823 K (550 °C). Long isothermal holding at this temperature also caused epsilon martensite formation during cooling, resulting from a decrease in austenite stability due to carbon depletion in the matrix when a quantifiable amount of cementite is formed.
